Moving through a busy station is easier when you have a simple routine. Use this checklist before boarding and again before every stop.
Before you leave
- Take a photo of your luggage and keep a record of its distinguishing features.
- Keep essential documents, medication and your phone with you, rather than in a suitcase stored elsewhere.
- If you use a tracker, check its battery and make sure you can access its account. A tracker is a finding aid, not a guarantee against theft.
On the train
- Follow the operator’s luggage rules and keep your bags where you can reasonably monitor them without blocking doors or aisles.
- Keep smaller valuables close. Avoid leaving them at your seat when you move through the carriage.
- Before a stop, check where your belongings are. Before getting off, count your bags.
If a bag disappears
Tell train staff and note the train, carriage, journey and approximate time. Keep your ticket and a description of the bag. If a tracker shows a location, share it with the authorities; do not confront anyone yourself.
